There hasn't been a whole lot going on around this club for a while, but I'm going to see if I can't get it running again. B.C. is the greatest place in the world and we ought to have a place around here to celebrate just how great it is and such.

We're having a contest for wallpapers or stamps related somehow to British Columbia. If you've got something of that sort you'd like to submit, or would like to make one, send a note to the club with a link to your submission (if you haven't submitted it yet and you want it to be club-exclusive, upload it to scraps). There will be one winner for each category.

If you don't want to submit but would like to help with judging send us a note. All finalists will be submitted on the club site unless otherwise requested. We'll announce the end of the contest in advance when we have a fair number of entries, with a minimum of two weeks, and then finish up the judging.

A little about our beautiful province of British Columbia

B.C. is a place unlike any other, a place defined by its wilderness and its stark, imposing beauty. Seperated from the rest of Canada by the Rocky Mountains, B.C. has always been very much its own place. B.C. was first inhabited by native peoples, who had a great variety of different cultures. It's always been a remote land but people from all over the world liver here now in one of the most multicultural societies anywhere.

The colony of Vancouver Island was founded in Victoria in 1843, and British Columbia in 1858. They were later joined under the excellent leadership of Sir James Douglas. B.C. joined Canada in 1871 after they promised to build us a railway. Since then B.C. has had a colourful political history including the long rule of W.A.C. Bennett and the settling of all those draft dodgers in the Kooteneys.

Today British Columbia is most famous as a tourist destination and one of the most desireable places in the world to live.

B.C. offers unsurpassed recreational activities, like skiing at world-famous resorts like Whistler/Blackcomb, Big White, or Silver Star, exploring the incredible variety of National and Provincial Parks around the province, surfing in Tofino and all up the coast, cycling and mountain biking, river and sea kayaking, sport fishing, whale watching, sailing and more.

Vancouver is B.C.'s largest city and is widely renowned as one of the best cities in the world, people come from all over the world to visit or to live here, and it sure is reflected in the housing prices, I tell you what. You can live in Vancouver for years and not run out of great restaurants to go to, fantastic variety of food. Also there are a wide variety of entertainment options, especially our beloved Vancouver Canucks.

The Provincial Capital of Victoria is popular among tourists for being "more British than the British." The city makes a big deal out of things like double-decker buses, fancy lampposts with flowers, and colonial architecture all over the downtown, such as the famous Empress Hotel and the Legislature Building, which was supposedly modeled after the Taj Mahal. It's also home to the world-famous Butchart Gardens and, in all honesty, is pretty much the most beautiful city in the world.

Other cool areas include the Kooteneys, which is home to more hippies per capita than anywhere I know of, and the Okanagan, which has the best summer of anyplace I've ever been.
